Simone Biles made her highly-anticipated return to competition on Saturday for the first time after a two-year hiatus.
The 26-year-old gymnast returned to her first meet since 2021 at the U.S. Classic .
Biles, a four-time gold medalist, has been vocal about her mental and physical health. Concerns about her health and experience with “the twisties” prompted Biles to withdraw from five events in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
The twisties is not a medical diagnosis, but rather a term used by gymnasts when they can no longer do a twisting maneuver they’ve done many times in the past due to a mental block that can happen at any time. The block can suddenly cause a person to lose their sense of space and dimension while they are in the air, usually while spinning.
Biles has won 32 medals across the Olympics and world championships, including 19 gold medals from the world championship.
