NEW ORLEANS — The Washington Huskies, led by Michael Penix Jr., defied the odds and are headed to the College Football Playoff title next week against top-ranking Michigan State.

Penix, who has two surgically repaired knees, passed for 430 yards and two touchdowns in New Orleans on Tuesday after fending off Texas 37-31 in the Sugar Bowl to advance to the College Football Playoff title game.

The Huskies are riding a 21-game winning streak. If successful against Michigan on Monday, they could clinch their first national championship since 1991, and the Pac-12’s first title since 2004.
