Former Colorado cop who beat Black man with gun goes on trial

AURORA, Colo. — A former Colorado police officer will go on trial Tuesday for his actions in the violent arrest of a Black man in 2021.

Opening statements are expected as the first day of trial begins for former Aurora police officer John Haubert.

Haubert pointed his weapon at Kyle Vinson’s head and then repeatedly hit him with the gun after Vinson tried to avoid being handcuffed, according to body camera footage and court documents.

Haubert, who is charged with assault and other charges, has pleaded not guilty. He also resigned from the Aurora Police Department.

Last year, former officer Francine Martinez was found guilty of failing to intervene in the violent arrest, and was sentenced to six months of house arrest.
