Charges dropped against five Virginia deputies in Irvo Otieno’s death

The family of a Black man who died after he was pinned to the floor by sheriff’s deputies expressed outrage after the prosecutor decided to withdraw murder charges against the five deputies who were involved in the deadly incident.

On Sunday, a judge granted Dinwiddie County Commonwealth district attorney’s motions to withdraw charges against the deputies were involved in the incident on March 6, 2023. Irvo Otieno, 28, died at a psychiatric hospital where he was held down on the floor for more than 10 minutes by deputies and medical staff.

Ten people were initially charged with second-degree murder in Otieno’s death, including seven sheriff’s deputies and three hospital workers. Prosecutors dropped charges against two of the hospital employees. Only two deputies and one hospital employee still face charges in connection with the incident.

More on the prosecutor’s decision to drop charges and calls for a DOJ investigation.
