US, South Africa discuss Gaza war ahead of ICJ ruling on urgent measures in genocide case

On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with South African officials about the war in Gaza, one day ahead of a ruling at the World Court over claims Israel has engaged in genocide.

The United Nations judges at the International Court of Justice are set to rule on South Africa’s request for emergency measures against Israel, which is accused of state-led genocide for its military operation in Gaza.

Friday’s ruling will not address the allegations of genocide occurred, but rather the emergency intervention South Africa has asked the court.

South Africa has asked the ICJ to order Israel to cease its assault in Gaza, which is a Palestinian territory.

Israel has denied allegations of perpetrating genocide in Gaza, where nearly 2 million Palestinians have been displaced and more than 25,000 have died.
