Cameroon president’s daughter comes out as lesbian, hopes to help Cameroonian gays

The daughter of Cameroon’s 91-year-old president, who recently came out as a lesbian in an Instagram post, hopes her story can help change anti-homosexuality laws in the central African country.

Brenda Biya, 27, was interviewed by French newspaper Le Parisien in an article that was published on Tuesday. She said prior to the Instagram post, she had not come out to her family. Brenda Biya lives in Switzerland and the United States, reported Le Parisien.

“There are plenty of people in the same situation as me who suffer because of who they are,” she said. “If I can give them hope, help them feel less alone, if I can send love, I’m happy.”

Cameroon President Paul Biya has not publicly commented.

Cameroonian law prohibits same-sex relations, which are are punishable by up to five years in prison under Cameroon.

Brenda Biya said she hopes her story can help bring change to the laws which punish homosexuality.
