On Friday, Nigeria’s former central bank Governor Godwin Emefiele was charged with fraud after he was accused of acquiring $6.2 million in bank funds under false pretences, among the 20 charges against him.
Emefiele pleaded not guilty.
So far, the ex-Central Bank governor is the most prominent official to confront corruption charges under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which commenced last year after a contentious and widely disputed election that has stoked tensions in Africa’s most populous country.
Emefiele’s trial is expected to start in February.
