AUSTIN, Texas — On Wednesday, a mistrial was declared for an Austin police officer in connection with the fatal shooting of Michael Ramos, an unarmed Black and Hispanic man.

The mistrial came after five days of deliberations.

Ramos was shot while he was inside of a vehicle trying to drive away from police who attempted to arrest him inside of a parking lot at an apartment complex.

The fatal shooting of Ramos happened in April 2020, shortly before the death of George Floyd, which still reverberated with community activists who were outraged by the police-involved shooting.
