TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A judge ruled on Saturday that a redistricting plan in Florida — supported by Gov. Ron DeSantis — violates the state constitution and is prohibited from being used for any future U.S. congressional elections because it adversely affects Black voters in north Florida who wouldn’t be able to choose their representative.

The plan has been kicked back to the state Legislature, including instructions to Florida lawmakers that they should draw a new congressional map that would be in compliance with the state constitution.

The decision on Saturday by Circuit Judge J. Lee Marsh was the latest blow to attempts, largely pushed by conservatives in Southern states, to draw new congressional maps opponents say diminishes Black voting power.
