MIAMI — Hundreds of people, including teachers and students, marched to school district headquarters in Miami to protest Florida’s changes to school curriculum, specifically related to U.S. slavery.

Crowds of demonstrators stood in front of Miami-Dade headquarters to protest the new standards, which include language that says enslaved people “developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”

The standards, which have been endorsed and peddled by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, have come under scrutiny from Democrats such as Vice President Kamala Harris, and also some members of the Republican Party such as Tim Scott (R-SC). Both DeSantis and Scott are running for president in 2024.
