Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nury Martinez resigned from her position today amid mounting calls for her and two other council members to resigned after an audio recording leaked.

Martinez issued a statement announcing her departure from the council and asking for privacy.

Dozens if people jam-packed the City Council chambers Monday and Tuesday demanding Martinez, as well as Gil Cedillo and Kevin de Leon.

The three council members were caught on audio having a discussion about redistricting. During the discussion, Martinez said in Spanish that Councilman Mike Bonin’s adopted Black son looked like a “little monkey.”

The discussion also ignited controversy because the council members on the audio recording discussed districts with Black voters that they wanted to help with their election efforts.

President Joe Biden was among many leaders across the country calling on all of the city council members in the leaked audio to step down.

Cedillo and de Leon have yet to announce their resignations.
