KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The trial of an 85-year-old white man who shot a Black teenager last year has been delayed after a judge ordered a mental evaluation.

An attorney for Andrew Lester made a request for the mental evaluation last month because of the man’s health issues. Prosecutors did not object to the request.

Lester is facing charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action after 16-year-old Ralph Yarl who went to his Kansas City home by mistake while picking up his younger brother.

The trial of Lester was scheduled to begin Oct. 7. A hearing will be held Oct. 8.
