DENVER — City officials are condemning the sudden appearance of racist signs found posted Thursday at bus stops in the Denver area.

The racist signs target Blacks using Jim Crow-era references, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris on immigration.

The signs were found by a bus driver around 5 a.m. who was traveling on his Route 15, one of the busiest corridors in Denver. Motorists took photos and videos of the signs and shared them on social media.

Mayor Mike Johnston responded to news about the racist signs with a statement on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, which said in part:

“I’m aware of the shameful signs found around our city. This type of abhorrent & racist behavior is absolutely not welcome here. Denver is a welcoming and inclusive city that gives opportunity to people from all walks of life, & we will fight to ensure that remains the case.”

Denver City Councilwoman Shontel Lewis told ABC7 Denver the racist signs are “upsetting” but she isn’t surprised by the increase in sexism and racism she has noticed because a woman of color is running for president.

She also said she is aware of reports of similar signs found in New York and Chicago. Lewis said the signs appear expensive and could be an organized attempt to spread hate and bigotry.

Regional Transportation District (RTD) told ABC 7 Denver they are working with police who have started an investigation to find out who posted the signs.

RTD also said drivers will be on the lookout and will immediately remove any racist signs found at bus stops.
