CHICAGO — One of the most visible homeless encampments in Chicago will reportedly be emptied out as officials try to clean up the streets ahead of the Democratic National Convention in August.

A city official told the Associated Press the 29 people staying in the homeless encampment next to Interstate 90 will be relocated to a shelter by next week, per the Associated Press.

The encampment will be emptied and permanently roped off on Wednesday, Chicago Department of Family and Support Services Commissioner Brandie Knazze said Friday.

An official said the reason the city decided to do it now is because they assumed federal authorities will eventually do so, and they didn’t want to wait asn risk having to do it with less time.
