DAKAR, Senegal — Bassirou Diomaye Faye is expected to be declared Senegal’s next president after his opponent from the ruling coalition called him on Monday and conceded the race to Faye.

Results from the first round of the delayed presidential election indicated that 44-year-old Faye may have secured an overwhelming majority of votes after polls closed on Sunday.

Faye’s supporter’s took to the streets, celebrating the early results, but his opponent, ruling coalition candidate 62-year-old Amadou Ba said it was too early to celebrate and that a run-off vote would be necessary to determine who would be Senegal’s next president.

Ba reportedly called Faye on Monday to congratulate his opponent on his victory.
