ATLANTA — Following a federal judge’s ruling of unconstitutional discrimination, the Georgia state Senate approved a bill on Wednesday to redraw school board districts in Georgia’s second-largest school system.

Democrats are sounding the alarm over the map supported by conservatives in the state, which has been prohibited by U.S. District Judge Eleanor Ross for the upcoming May 2024 election in the Cobb County school district. Despite Democratic support in recent statewide elections, the map has led to a 4-3 Republican majority.

A lawsuit filed by a group of Cobb County residents and left-leaning political groups alleges that Black and Hispanic voters were packed into three districts in southern Atlanta county, which boosted Republicans’ grip on the remaining districts.
