TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver has died, just one day after she was unable to stand-in as acting governor due to an undisclosed medical issue.

Oliver, 71, was hospitalized on Monday while she was acting as governor in place of Gov. Phil Murphy who was on vacation in Italy until Aug. 13.

Per the state constitution, the senate president will replace Oliver in the interim.

Oliver has served as New Jersey’s lieutenant governor since 2018.

In 2010, she became the first African-American woman to serve as New Jersey’s Assembly Speaker in the state’s history.
