The U.S. Supreme Court ruled today on a case that will eliminate affirmative action in higher education, a long-sought after goal of conservative lawmakers.

In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court struck down a decades-old law that helped many students of color gain admission to some of the oldest private and public educational institutions, including Harvard University. Affirmative action was also a benefit for women who were also affected.

The Supreme Court’s decision was dominated by conservative justices, three of which were nominated by former president Donald Trump.

In another decision, a 6-2 decision in the case of Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard College also ended affirmative action.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to remove race-conscious admissions, many institutions are under fire for their longstanding practice of favoring applicants whose families have ties to alumni and key administrators.
