An officer with the Los Angeles Police Department has been suspended after he was caught on video punching a Black motorist in the face while the man appeared to be handcuffed.

Video of the incident, which has gone viral, reportedly happened on July 28 in the South Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts, sparking widespread outrage when the footage went viral.

The motorist, 28-year-old Alexander Donta Mitchell, was pulled over July 28 during a routine traffic stop.

In the video, Mitchell is restrained by two officers and can be seen asking the officers “What did I do?” when one of two officers punches him in the face.

The LAPD said the officer who punched Mitchell has been relieved from field duty. No other disciplinary action against the officer is known.

The department said they are investigating the incident.
