HOUSTON — On Tuesday, a federal judge dismissed the majority of civil rights claims in a lawsuit filed by a Black teenager who alleged that his high school in Texas engaged in racial and gender discrimination for punishing him when he refused to change his hairstyle per their policy.

The judge’s ruling was in response to Barbers Hill school district’s policy which restricts male students from having long hair.

Darryl George, who is now 18, wore dreadlocks that school officials said violated their dress code, preventing the high school junior from attending school for most of the 2023-24 school year.
