Johnson served in the U.S. House of Representatives for more than three decades. Johnson also broke ground in Texas, becoming the first Black chief psychiatric nurse at Dallas’ Veterans Affairs hospital. She served in the Texas state senate before she was elected to congress.

“For three decades, Chairwoman Johnson was a powerful force in the United States Congress, always focused on the future,” House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi said in a statement. “The impact of Eddie Bernice Johnson’s masterful, patriotic leadership will be felt for generations,” she added.
