ST. LOUIS — A protest marking the 10-year anniversary of the death of Michael Brown, Jr. took a violent turn Friday night, leaving an officer in critical condition.
During a news conference on Saturday, Ferguson Police Chief Troy Doyle said Officer Travis Brown suffered a severe brain injury after he was knocked to the ground.
Doyle said two additional officers also were also hurt during the protest, which was held outside of the Ferguson police station. Multiple people were arrested.
St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell said the people responsible for injuring police will face charges.
On Friday, the local community peacefully marched four and a half miles during a unity walk from Brown’s high school to the street where Brown was killed.
Brown, an unarmed, 18-year-old Black man, was killed in 2014 by Darren Wilson, a white police officer. Following an investigation into the fatal shooting, the U.S. Department of Justice did not recommend charges be filed against Wilson.
The fatal, officer-involved shooting of Brown contributed to the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement.
