LAGOS, Nigeria — Following a massive blast in Oyo state that shook buildings and caused residents to flee onto the streets, Nigerian rescuers searched for injured individuals on Tuesday night.
At least two people were killed and more than two dozen were injured by the explosion, according to the Oyo state government.
As the cause of the blast remained uncertain, local media reported buildings collapse and windows shattered. The explosion was audible in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, located about 80 miles from Lagos, the country’s capital.
“Relevant agencies are carrying out search and rescue operations at the scene of the incident. Residents of the state are urged to remain calm as the Oyo State Government is on top of the situation,” Oyo state government said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Governor Seyi Makinde said the explosion likely came from an illegal mining operation.
