Dozens of state and local leaders gathered at the highly-anticipated unveiling of North Carolina Freedom Park located in downtown Raleigh between the state Legislative Building and the governor’s Executive Mansion.

At the ceremony, Gov. Roy Cooper said he looked forward to North Carolina students and tourists visiting the capital city visiting a learning environment that displays “the brutal truth and extraordinary accomplishment” of Black Americans, reported The Associated Press.

The project received support from Republican and Democratic legislators.

Cooper, who cannot run for reelection in 2024, has also been credited with the removal of Confederate monuments from Capitol grounds during his limited term as governor.

Community leaders said they hope the new park will spark dialogue and encourage the North Carolinians to face all of the state’s history.
