Family members of slain civil rights activist Malcolm X announced on Tuesday they plan to sue the New York Police Department and several federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and CIA for the handling of his assassination in 1965.
Tuesday’s announcement was made on the same day X, born Malcolm Little, was shot to death while speaking to an audience at the former Audubon Ballroom in upper Manhattan.
Two of X’s daughters, Ilyasah Shabazz and Qubilah Shabazz, made the announcement, joined by attorney Ben Crump, at a news conference.
According to the family, new information surfaced which including multiple allegations, including conspiracy in the assassination of X, Crump said during a news conference.
“For years our family has fought for the truth to come to light,” Shabazz said at the news conference.

Three men were convicted in connection with the case. Two of the men were exonerated in 2021 after another investigation revealed issues with the evidence used to convict them.
Crump said the plaintiffs are seeking $100 million in damages.
