A new alert system dubbed the “The Emmett Till Alert” was announced today in Maryland to highlight racist incidents that would ultimately trickle down to the Black community.

The alerts will notify Black leaders in Maryland of racist incident and hate crime that recently occurred in the state. The Emmett Till alerts will be sent to Black elected officials statewide, civil rights organizations, clergies and more.

The alert system will operate on three levels: low, medium, and high. A high alert indicates a strong possibility of violence or death.

The first alert was sent to leaders on Monday to not system was up any them the system was in operation.

Black leaders in Maryland are hopeful the alert system can be replicated in other parts of the country.
