A White woman in Wisconsin accused of spitting on a Black teen during a George Floyd protest in 2020 said she wants a trial.
Stephanie Rapkin, 66, was scheduled for a plea hearing on Tuesday, but her attorney told the judge that Rapkin requested he withdraw from representing her, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
Rapkin, who is an attorney, is charged with disorderly conduct.
Rapkin rejected a plea and told the judge she wants to go to trial. She has reportedly disputed accusations that she spit on a Black teen in 2020.
The person Rapkin was accused of spitting on, Eric Lucas, was 17 at the time of the incident in 2020. Lucas sued Rapkin for battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The civil suit has been on hold pending the outcome of the criminal charges.
Rapkin is expected to be back in court Aug. 17 for a status hearing. A trial is set for Oct. 3.
