A White police officer who fatally shot an unarmed Black man after a traffic stop in Michigan has been charged with second degree murder.
The incident happened in April in Grand Rapids after the officer pulled the man over reportedly due to an issue with the license plates on the vehicle the man was driving. Dash cam video showed the 26-year-old man get out of the car before he was instructed to do so. In the body cam video, he appeared to be trying to evade the officer as he walked away from him and started running.
At one point during the confrontation, the officer pulled out a Taser, which the man could be seen grabbing on body cam video. The two could be seen on cellphone video struggling on the ground as the officer tried to subdue the man.
Towards the end of the struggle, cellphone video showed the officer mounted on top of the man. He then retrieved his gun from its holster and fatally shot the man in the back of the head.
The officer, who was not identified at the time, was suspended pending an investigation.
Prosecutors announced today that the officer would face second degree murder charges.

Opinion: Too often police officers don’t face charges for an alleged crime they commit, or receive a conviction with a punishment that matches the crime. This case will be another test of the “justice” system, which often leans in the favor of police.
