MIAMI, FL — An investigation is underway after a Miami police officer was caught on video opening fire into a windshield while on top of the hood of a car.
The shooting happened on Sunday at Bayfront Park where a Caribbean music festival known as “Best of the Best” was taking place. The officer was directing traffic before the incident occurred.
Cellphone video showed the officer firing his weapon at the car while he was on top the hood as the vehicle was moving before it comes to a stop and the driver, who is Black, gets out. The video did not show what led up to the shooting.
Miami police said the vehicle “made contact” with the officer before the shooting occurred but did not have more details on exactly what happened before the officer opened fire.
The driver’s sister Sherylann Clarke told local news station WPLG she was inside the car with her brother 21-year-old Menelek Clarke when the shooting occurred. She said the two were simply looking for parking before the shooting happened.
Menelek was shot by police multiple times before he arrested and taken to a local hospital, WPLG reported.
Police said the officer was also hospitalized.
“I feel like he was wrongfully shot multiple times in his vehicle with no weapon,” Sherylann told WPLG.
One video showed the officer firing into a black BMW before the driver gets out and surrenders to police. In another video Menelek can be seen being ordered to rollover with blood stains on the back of his shirt before police arrest him.
“The patrol officer, we were all stopped, we were in the middle lane,” Sherylann told WPLG. “He told everyone else to go with his hand — hand signaling that we can go. And then he stood in front of my brother’s car and shot him.”
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings in Florida.
