NEWARK, NJ — Chaos unfolded on Friday as Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested by Homeland Security during a protest when he and several officials tried to gain access to an immigrant detention facility.

Baraka, accompanied by fellow Democrats, including new U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver, and Rep. Rob Menendez (D-8th) and Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman.

Though the representatives were granted access, Baraka, who is also running for governor, was denied entry.

Following Baraka’s arrest, interim U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba said Baraka trespassed and ignored Homeland Security Investigation’s warnings to not enter.

Baraka’s office confirmed the mayor has been arrested by ICE.

Democrats have called for Baraka’s immediate release.
