SALT LAKE CITY — On Tuesday, Utah’s governor signed a bill into law that specifically prohibits diversity training, hiring, and inclusion programs at universities and in state government, marking a significant shift in the state’s approach to workplace and academic diversity.
The legislation signed by Spencer Cox after receiving strong approval from the state House and Senate, which was overwhelmingly passed on party-line majorities.
Cox, who is a Republican, previously said he supported the idea.
Cox is approaching the end of his first term as governor. He has moved further to the right on “diversity, equity, and inclusion,” also known as DEI. It follows a bill he signed into law regulating discussions of race and religion in public schools.
