The United Nations released a new report on Wednesday indicating a dramatic increase in hunger worldwide that puts hundreds of millions more people on the brink of starvation.

“The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World” report indicates about 2.3 billion people around the world were food insecure last year.

The report estimates of up to 828 million people faced hunger in 2021 — an increase of about 50 million people.

The report showed hunger rates increased in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Last year, hunger affected 278 million people in Africa, 425 million in Asia, and 56.5 million in Latin America and the Caribbean, according to the report.

The report indicated hunger moved at a slower pace than 2019 to 2020.

U.N. World Food Program officials said the situation could get worse in the coming months, pointing to the war in Ukraine as one of the leading factors in the increase in hunger.

Officials warned that as many as 50 million people are also near famine.

Opinion: The U.S. has poured billions in military aid into Ukraine but the U.S. and global community are not prioritizing the domino effect of Russia’s war or the lingering impact of COVID-19. It’s unconscionable modern civilizations are allowing the rest of the world starve to death.
