OCALA, Fla. — A jury will hear opening statements on the first day of trial for a 60-year-old white woman who fatally shot her Black neighbor during a dispute about children playing near her home.

According to Marion County Sheriff’s Office, on June 2, 2023, Susan Lorincz shot 35-year-old Ajike “A.J.” Owens through a closed door after Owens went to speak with Lorincz about a dispute over Owens’ children playing in a field near her home. Owens’ 10-year-old son was nearby when she was fatally shot.

Lorincz, who admitted to the shooting, was arrested on June 6, 2023, and charged with first-degree manslaughter. She pleaded not guilty on July 10, 2023.

If convicted, Lorincz faces up to 30 years in prison.
