BRUNSWICK, Ga. — The former prosecutor in the Ahmaud Arbery trial faced a jury trial on Tuesday over allegations she abused her power in an attempt to protect the two men who killed the Black man after chasing him down in a neighborhood where he had been jogging in 2020.

Jackie Johnson, former district attorney of Glynn County, appeared in court on Tuesday where jurors heard more than two hours of opening statements.

Arbery’s killers remained free after his death in July 2020 — it took more than two months after the 25-year-old man was killed before anyone was arrested.

In 2021, Johnson was charged with violating her oath of office, and one misdemeanor count of hindering a police investigation.

More on the allegations and charges against Johnson.
