Sources close to former President Donald Trump have been leaking possible names that could be on Trump’s shortlist for Vice President, which he is expected to announce by next week. Among the names floating around are South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate.
Trump has been tightlipped about who his nominee will be with former Vice President Mike Pence out of the campaign. While names such as Florida Senator Marco Rubio, Congressman J.D. Vance, and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.
On CBS’s “Face the Nation,” on Sunday, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina shared his support for Sen. Tim Scott.
Graham said Scott, who also ran for the Republican presidential nomination, would be particularly valuable to Trump if Biden were to be replaced by Vice President Kamala Harris, who is the first Black woman to hold the office.
Graham said that if Harris were to replace Biden, “This is a dramatically different race than it is right now today. I hope people are thinking about that on our side.”
Even as more Democrats have called for Biden to step down, he insists he won’t drop out.
OPINION: Racism is the underpinning of Trump’s campaign, and having a Black Vice President on his ticket would put Black America front and center, which Trump would want to politicize to the hilt. An all-white Republican ticket doesn’t seem like a wise choice in 2024. It’s clear why Scott is an appealing choice, but Latino representation matters as well, so Sen. Rubio doesn’t seem like a longshot either.
