Suspect dead after killing 8 in Chicago; most victims were family members, police say

CHICAGO — A man suspected of shooting and killing eight people in a Chicago suburb over the weekend was related to most of the victims, police said.

Romeo Nance, 23, fatally shot himself on Monday near Natalia, Texas during a confrontation with law enforcement after he fled from the deadly shootings in the Chicago area, according to Joliet Police Department.

Authorities said the crime spree began in Joliet on Sunday when Nance shot seven people at the homes of belonging to two of his relatives in the city of Joliet, a suburban city about 35 miles southwest of Chicago. Nance is also believed to have fired randomly at two men, killing one of them.

On Tuesday, the Will County coroner identified the victims several of the victims, including: 38-year-old Christine Esters, 35-year-old William Esters II, 20-year-old Alexandria Nance, 31-year-old Joshua Nance, and 47-year-old Tameka Nance. They did not release the names of two of the victims who were teenagers.

Authorities identified one of the men randomly fired at who died was identified as Toyosi Bakare, a 28-year-old Nigerian national who moved to the U.S. about three years ago. Bakare was fatally shot out of an apartment building.

Investigators said they still do not know the motive behind the shooting rampage.
