A new study found potentially cancerous carcinogens in synthetic braiding hair products that are often used by Black women.

According to Consumer Reports, testing results showed ten popular synthetic braiding hair products had carcinogens, chemicals that may cause cancer in 100 percent of the hair samples. The hair samples tested positive for benzene and lead.

According to Consumer Reports, the danger increases when the hair is placed in hot water, causing it to release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which can irritate the eyes and throat.
