A new report shines light on how Black Gen Zers are using social media, and the findings show significant differences in how they use digital technology compared with their peers.
In research firm Horowitz’s annual report, FOCUS Generation Next, three in four Black Gen Z consumers (75%) said they use social media apps every day or almost every day. YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok were the leading platforms of choice for Black Gen Zers. They also outpaced all other Gen Zers with two-thirds of them reporting higher use of Tik-Tok (67%) compared to 55% of the rest of Gen Zers.
Black Gen Zers also reported higher usage of X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
The study also found that 54% of Black Gen Zers go to social media to receive their news on current events. It also indicated Black Gen Zers “prioritize news and information relevant to the Black community, as well as social justice issues.”
What’s more, the study found 79% of Black Gen Zers reported occasionally watching a show after they saw a clip on social media, in addition to using social media to keep up with their favorite shows.
