Stanford University approves its first-ever department of African and African American Studies

STANFORD, Calif. — Stanford University has approved the creation of a department of African and African American Studies, which is scheduled to open in January.

Stanford University’s Board of Trustees approved establishing the new department last week. The African and African American Studies, which will in the School of Humanities and Sciences, according to Stanford Report.

For more than 50 years, Stanford University has had a African and African American Studies (AAAS) program but the murder of George Floyd spurred additional support for the creation of a department dedicated to AAAS, according to Stanford Report.

The new department was also recommended by a task force Stanford University started in 2021.

Ato Quayson, the Jean G. and Morris M. Doyle Professor in Interdisciplinary Studies, and a professor of English, will serve as the department’s inaugural chair.
