COLUMBIA, S.C. — Police departments across the country are among the many agencies that celebrate Black History Month (BHM), but for two police departments in South Carolina, that hasn’t come without issue this year.
This week, Goose Creek Police Department said they would no longer promote BHM activities due to the barrage of racist comments they have received on social media. And in nearby North Charleston, police experienced a similar online response and decided to disable comments on their BHM social media posts following advice from their attorneys, reported WCBD-TV.
On Thursday, NCPD issued a statement on its Facebook page:
“The North Charleston Police Department takes pride in being an all-inclusive agency, hiring people of all faiths, colors, and creeds. That includes recognizing sworn and non-sworn employees during the celebration of Black History Month,” the department said on its Facebook page. “Unfortunately, we have seen many racist comments on our Black History Month posts. These are totally unacceptable.”
GCPD said it would continue to celebrate and promote Black History Month internally but not include social media.
