Soul singer Jerry “Ice Man” Butler dies at 85

CHICAGO — Beloved soul singer Jerry “Ice Man” Butler, whose legendary hit songs include “For Your Precious Love,” and “Only the Strong Survive” has died at age 85.

Butler , who was also the founder and lead singer of the R&B group the Impressions, died Thursday due to Parkinson’s disease at his home in Chicago, the Associated Press reported.

Butler, a three-time Grammy nominee was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 with The Impressions. Butler, a longtime Chicago resident, was also engaged in his community, serving on the Cook County commission while continuing to perform in his later years.

Butler was also songwriter whose credits include “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” a collaboration with Otis Record that became one of his most memorable songs.
