SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Sangamon County Board of Supervisors approved a $10 million settlement to the family of Sonya Massey who was fatally shot in her home last year by a sheriff’s deputy.
The supervisors came to an agreement on the settlement Tuesday night. The settlement allows the county to avoid a potentially lengthy trial.
Massey’s family will reportedly appear at a press conference on Wednesday.
Former deputy Sean Grayson, 30, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of the 36-year-old Black woman. Massey was fatally shot July 6 by Grayson while holding a pot of water after he and another deputy responded to her call reporting a possible prowler at her home.
Massey had reportedly been suffering from mental health issues prior to the shooting.
Grayson is currently in jail awaiting trial.
