MANCHESTER, ENGLAND — Before Sunday’s victory for the Manchester City Women game, star player Khadija “Bunny” Shaw was the talk of the game when she performed what’s known as a Black Power salute after she scored the goal.
Shaw’s salute, also referred to as the 1968 Olympics Black Power Salute, on the field Sunday was in response to the racial abuse directed at her online.
Shaw, who is considered one of the best strikers in the league, helped lift Manchester City Women to their 4-0 victory over Liverpool.
Shaw, like many Black soccer players around the world, is frequently targeted with racial abuse online, in the stands, and on the field. Some of the more recent wave of abuse aimed Shaw came after a match against Arsenal on Feb. 2.
