Smokey Robinson denies rape allegations, sues former housekeepers for defamation

LOS ANGELES — Motown legend Smokey Robinson has filed a $500 million defamation countersuit against his former housekeepers after he was accused of sexual assault, which he has vehemently denied.

The counter lawsuit comes after an initial lawsuit was filed by the four women earlier this month, identified only as Jane Does, who alleged that Robinson had repeatedly sexually assaulted them during their employment at his Chatsworth home between 2007 and 2024. The plaintiffs claimed that they endured a hostile work environment, labor violations, and sexual abuse, and are seeking at least $50 million in damages.

In response, Robinson’s legal team described the women’s lawsuit as an “extortionate plan” aimed at damaging his reputation and extracting money from him. They argued that the women had previously enjoyed a close relationship with the Robinsons, receiving gifts and support during their employment, which contradicted their claims of abuse. Robinson’s attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the women’s lawsuit, contending that the plaintiffs should not be allowed to remain anonymous after making public allegations.

Robinson’s countersuit alleges that the women, along with their attorney, conspired to make slanderous statements against him and his wife, Frances Robinson. The countersuit claims that the accusations were not only false but also intended to harm Robinson’s reputation and career. The legal document highlights instances of friendly communication between the Robinsons and the plaintiffs, suggesting that the women had ulterior motives in bringing forth their allegations.

The countersuit also includes claims of elder abuse, civil conspiracy, and emotional distress against the plaintiffs. Robinson’s legal team argues that the women are attempting to intimidate and silence him through their lawsuit, which they assert is a classic example of a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP). Such lawsuits are often used to deter individuals from exercising their right to free speech, particularly in cases involving public figures.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department launched an investigation into the allegations made against Robinson following the initial lawsuit.
