WASHINGTON D.C. — In response to growing unrest and upheaval as the Trump Administration and Republicans’ support of wide-reaching federal budget cuts and challenges to court rulings, Sen. Cory Booker (D-New Jersey) held a record-breaking protest speech on the U.S. Senate floor which began on Monday.
Booker ended his protest speech on Tuesday.
After ending his marathon speech, the 55-year-old former Mayor of Newark told reporters he fasted and increased his water intake before he embarked on his record-breaking protest calling out President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, and urging Republicans to shift away from Trump’s policies against federal spending and agencies.
The record U.S. Senate speech was previously held by late Republican Senator Strom Thurmond — who notoriously supported racist, anti-Black policies and was outed after his death for having a secret biracial daughter.
Some Democrats have expressed hope Booker’s speech will jumpstart a movement that impedes Trump’s policies.
