SCOTUS decision could shift balance of power favorably for Black voters in Louisiana

The U.S. Supreme Court released its hold today on a voter map redistricting case from Louisiana that will likely require the red state to carve out another Congressional district for predominantly Black voters.

The decision is viewed as a win for Black voters in Louisiana, where one-third of the state’s citizens are Black. The new district could also shore up another congressional seat for Democrats.

But the legal battle is far from over, as the contentious fray over redistricting maps that have favored Republicans has been ongoing more than a year. In Louisiana’s 2022 congressional elections, the map in question was used, which represented White majorities in five of the six districts. Most of those majority-White districts are represented by conservatives.
