ANKENY, Iowa — Republican presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) is the latest elected official to criticize Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over changes to its curriculum that revises slavery in U.S. history — a move some have called “propaganda.”
While vising Ankeny for a town hall event on Thursday, Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate, rejected DeSantis’ version of U.S. slavery and told reporters DeSantis should clarify his stance.
“What slavery was really about was separating families, about mutilating humans and even raping their wives. It was just devastating,” Scott said.
DeSantis and Florida officials have been widely condemned for from groups, including the NAACP and Vice President Kamala Harris for instructing students that enslaved people learned skills that contribute to their “personal benefit.”
