Report indicates FB social media ads failed to detect hate speech

A recent report indicates the world’s largest social media platform failed to detect hate speech within its advertisements.

The tests were performed by global nonprofit organizations that posted blatantly racist advertisements in Ethiopia, for example, where warring groups have called for genocide. The platform failed to detect the ads even after previous ads with hateful content were directly brought to the company’s attention.

If that’s not enough, a report released May 31 also shows hateful discourse on the platform has jumped 38% from the previous month.

A separate report released last year has shown that this platform’s algorithms have been biased against people of color.

The issues of spreading hate aren’t just a domestic problem. This platform has been instrumental in providing hate groups a vehicle to incite violence in conflict-saddled countries such as Myanmar.

More about this report can be found here.

Opinion: BNN eschews this platform and will never use it — won’t even mention its name. The report is also a reminder this company hasn’t cleaned up its issues with proliferating hate speech after all of its racially-charged content seen in the 2016 presidential election season. It also played a role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. It’s baffling how anybody, other than hate mongers, find any utility using this platform.
