Report: Hate crimes in California jumped just over 20% in 2022

New data released on Tuesday shows the number of reported hate crimes in California increased last year.

The reported hate crimes included violent incidents stemming attributed to bias, as well as hate crimes involving racism against Black people, homophobia and anti-Semitism — all of which increased in 2022 when compared with 2021 data.

The total reported hate crimes increased 20.2%, from 1,763 reported incidents in 2021 to 2,120 last year. Officials say the actual number of hate crimes incidents in California is likely higher than the total incidents reported.
