MONTGOMERY, AL — R&B and soul songstress Angie Stone has died after she was involved in a car accident early Saturday morning in Alabama. She was 63.
According to the Alabama Highway Patrol, Stone was traveling in a 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van that turned over on Interstate 65 around 4:25 a.m. about 5 miles away from Montgomery before it was struck by a 2021 Freightliner Cascadia truck.
There were reportedly nine people in the vehicle. Stone was the only person killed in the crash. She died at the scene, the AHP said in a new release.
Stone was leaving Mobile and was scheduled to perform in Atlanta at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) men’s Championship basketball game on Saturday.
Stone was born Dec. 18, 1961 in Columbia, South Carolina. Stone is known for hit songs, including “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” from her 2001 album “Mahogony Soul” which reached No. 22 on the Billboard 200. Additional hits includes “No More Rain (In This Cloud)”, “Baby” in collaboration with soul singer Betty Wright, and “Brotha.”
